The results
Successful resumption of the 2020 NRL season
An app built and launched in less than 21 days, installed on 900+ player and coaching staff devices
A design system empowering faster deployments with experience consistency
Pair-designing to bridge gaps between design and development
A consistent tone of voice
‘How are you feeling today?’
I led my team to design the NRL Checkup app to facilitate daily coronavirus and mental health checks for players and staff to resume the 2020 NRL season – in less than three weeks.
The app enabled those involved to securely self-test and connect to the medical and welfare officers.
Remotely possible
To visualise, prototype and test the app, I worked remotely, using a combination of Miro, Figma and Dovetail.
Daily communications were via a combination of Slack, Webex and Trello.
A vital voice
Messaging and instant calls-to-action were critical to this experience.
In response to the urgency, I created a tone-of-voice style guide to ensure it was simple to understand and accessible through a calm, reassuring experience.
Beyond the screen
Social distancing influenced the app design, which delivered visual cues beyond close-screen interaction, such as players showing their mobile device to access ‘the bubble’.
Speedy updates
To facilitate fast updates and testing, I created a live pair-designing process with the development team through Figma, empowering timely deployments with experience consistency.
This accommodated the stream of feedback from players, staff, medical, welfare, State and Australian and New Zealand governments as the app went live.
Match time!
The app was built and launched in less than 21 days, with 900+ players and coaching staff using it daily.
The NRL season resumed on May 28 2020, the first contact-sport competition to return globally during the pandemic.
Testimonials
“Working perfectly.”
“Seamless.”
“Alun brought an eye for detail that was unmatched and provided a great perspective of the user for all the products he worked on. Al and I worked directly together in a ‘pressure cooker’ project over these COVID months, and the outcome was a great example of how effective and easy he is to work with.”
